PERSONAL STATEMENT 1. Motivations for Applying to the Program My name is Tran Hoai Thuong, a 31-year-old educator and researcher from
Vietnam. My deep passion for history has driven me to explore historical
narratives and their influence on international relations. As Vietnam and
South Korea continue to strengthen their bilateral ties, I am particularly
interested in studying the historical foundations that have shaped their
interactions. To deepen my expertise, I aspire to pursue a Master’s degree in Korean
History at Kongju National University
through the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS-G) 2025. Kongju National
University, renowned for its strong history department and research-oriented
approach, provides an ideal environment to refine my research skills and
contribute to the study of Vietnam-Korea relations. After completing my degree,
I aim to return to Vietnam to teach at the Faculty of History, University of
Social Sciences and Humanities (USSH), while engaging in research that
fosters academic exchanges between the two countries. 2. Educational Background I earned my Bachelor's degree in Ho Chi Minh Thought from the Faculty of
History, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National
University Ho Chi Minh City (USSH-VNUHCM). My studies provided a solid
foundation in historical analysis, philosophy, and diplomacy. My passion for
research was reinforced when I received a university-level award for my
study, “Applying Ho Chi Minh’s Ideology in
Vietnam–U.S. Relations (1995–2015),” which honed my academic
writing, critical thinking, and historical research skills. Additionally, I won Third Prize in the Vietnamese National
History Competition (2012), earning direct admission to
university. Over the years, I have developed strong language skills,
achieving TOPIK Level 6,
demonstrating my advanced Korean proficiency. My self-study journey has been
enriched through extensive reading, cultural immersion, and participation in
academic programs in South Korea. 3. Significant Experiences My academic journey has been shaped by diverse international experiences,
two of which significantly influenced my perspective on Korean history and
culture: ·
2012 Jeju World Youth
Forum: This event broadened my understanding of global youth
leadership and historical discourse. ·
2018 Cultural
Partnership Initiative (CPI) Program: Sponsored by the Korea
Foundation, this program allowed me to study at Seoul National University
(SNU), where I received Korean language and cultural training along with
specialized courses on tourism management. I traveled across ten provinces in
South Korea, visiting historical sites, museums, and academic institutions.
This experience deepened my understanding of Korea’s modernization and
solidified my academic interest in President Park Chung
Hee’s economic policies and their impact on Korea-Vietnam relations. 4. Influential Figures or Events One of the most influential figures in my academic journey is Professor
Lee Hyang Mi, my mentor during the CPI program. Her passion
for history and dedication to research inspired me to pursue advanced studies
in Korean history. She encouraged me to view history not only as a study of
the past but as a tool for understanding and shaping contemporary
international relations. Her mentorship reinforced my ambition to specialize
in Vietnam-Korea diplomatic history and contribute to academic discussions on
bilateral relations. 5. Awards, Publications, and Skills Awards: ·
Third Prize, Vietnamese
National History Competition (2012) ·
University-level
Research Award for Outstanding Academic Research (2016) Skills: ·
Korean Language
Proficiency: TOPIK Level 6 ·
Historical Research
& Analysis ·
Academic Writing ·
Cross-Cultural
Communication 6. Extracurricular Activities, Community Service, and Work
Experiences After graduation, I worked as a history teacher at a
vocational school for two years, developing innovative
teaching methods to engage students. I also founded a History
Olympiad Club for high school students, mentoring them for
national competitions. Beyond teaching, I co-founded a local tourism company
in Hai Tac Archipelago, Kien Giang Province, applying the tourism management
knowledge I gained from the CPI program. Recognizing the importance of
language proficiency in academic research, I later transitioned to teaching
Korean, which strengthened my language skills and allowed me
to collaborate with Korean scholars and students, deepening my understanding
of Korean culture and history. 7. Conclusion With my strong academic background, research experience, and passion for
history, I am a well-qualified candidate for the GKS-G
Scholarship. Studying at Kongju National
University will provide an outstanding academic environment
to deepen my research on Korea-Vietnam relations and contribute to the
growing field of Korean Studies. My ultimate goal is to become a historian
and professor specializing in Vietnam-Korea relations,
promoting cross-cultural academic exchanges and fostering a deeper
understanding between the two nations. I sincerely appreciate your consideration of my application. Thank you! |
